Is Your Dog Waiting for the Treat or Still Learning the Cue?
Using food to guide a dog into a new position can make the first steps easier. Owners often see quick progress. But if the same setup continues without reducing that help, the dog may learn to wait for the hand holding the treat rather than respond to the spoken cue.
Look at your own sequence first. Do you bring out food before asking for a sit? Does your hand move every time? When your hand is empty, do you use the same gesture? These observations can help you work out whether the dog still needs guidance or whether the cue is not yet clear enough.
Once the dog begins to understand the behaviour, food used as a lure can be gradually reduced while food still follows as a reward. For example, keep the food in your pocket, use a hand signal the dog knows, mark the moment they sit and then deliver the food. The aim is for the dog to learn that their behaviour makes the reward happen.
If moving from food in the hand to an empty hand causes confusion, return to an easier step and reduce the help more gradually. Work in a quiet place first. Trying the new setup immediately in a park full of other dogs or beside a busy road adds several challenges at once.
Reducing a prompt does not mean reducing rewards immediately. While the dog is learning the new setup, clear rewards still matter. If they respond at home but struggle outside, consider the difficulty of the situation rather than judging their understanding from success in one location.
For puppies, a clear training sequence from the beginning can help owners avoid needing to show a treat every time. Dogs with previous training can also revisit these foundations when familiar cues are difficult to use in everyday life.
